Designing Civic Encounter

Designing Civic Encounter is a series of interventions engaging in existing and potential forms of urban development and public culture. The event will unfold through a bus tour traversing urban locations within and around Ramallah city enabling debates and conversations at different stations, a two-day symposium on questions of urban transformations in Palestinian and other Arab cities, and a full day workshop with visionary social architect Teddy Cruz.

Makram Hamdan pushes the limits of poetic control, visceral constraint, and physical endurance in this challenging performance based on Sufi Whirling. Desarrollar, is a collaboration with visual and media artist Laura Schwamb. Makram Hamdan choreographed the work to multiply the “self” by projecting Laura Scwhamb’s video while simultaneously performing live, creating an intimate meditative and multi-dimensional duet.

Dima Hajjar: Sky Under Surveillance

The sky balconies peel off, ceilings are shattering, walls are destroyed, the pillars fall from the top, and remains a sky… under surveillance, a prelude to a dismantling…Non-stop monitoring cameras are recording the random appearances of shadows on the wall…The sky is composing shadows on the canvas, writing its own memories…This is my long personal story with painting in parallel with the destruction of a sky or… some reconstruction.

This photographic project features works with architectural motifs that explore the role and value of cultural heritage, and includes a public photographic exhibition with specially-commissioned pieces and work by emerging artists from the Middle East and UK, including Lamya Gargash.
