The Walls

Pari Nadimi Gallery presents a major solo exhibition of a new series of photographs “The Walls” by acclaimed Iranian film director and photographer Abbas Kiarostami. Pari Nadimi Gallery will be the first venue to exhibit “The Walls” which is a Featured Exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. A new book on Kiarostami’s new series photographs titled “The Walls” by Paris based celebrated writer Youssef Ishaghpour will accompany Kiarostami’s exhibition at Pari Nadimi Gallery.

Contemporary Arab Dancers and Choreographers Perform in Beirut

 On behalf of Leymoun–The Arab Contemporary Dance Network and Maqamat Dance Theatre, it is our greatest pleasure to invite you to participate in the second edition of the Arab Dance Platform, which showcases and promotes contemporary dance practices and performances of Arab choreographers. The first edition of the Arab Dance Platform took place in Beirut, Lebanon in 2009, during the Beirut International Platform of Dance (BIPOD). More than 20 choreographers were showcased and over 120 international dance presenters, critics and festival directors participated in the event. After the success of the launch, the second edition of the biennial platform will again take place in Beirut within BIPOD, from the 20th until the 24th of April 2011. This year the festival anticipates greater regional and international participation and aims to introduce the works of established and emerging choreographers in addition to young talents, who will show short pieces and works-inprogress in studio presentations. More than thirty Contemporary Dance companies and choreographers from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco will be presenting works in addition to participating in networking meetings, lecture series and a convening for Leymoun- Arab Contemporary Dance Network.

Hope: A conversation with Lara Baladi

Lara Baladi works essentially with reproducible images in various media and formats. Born in Lebanon, raised in Paris, and currently residing in Egypt, Baladi's installations, videos and collages, address memory, both collective and personal, in a codified language that articulates a multicultural perspective in a world of shifting boundaries. Her work has been exhibited internationally at various spaces around the Middle East, the U.S., Japan and Europe, and is part of a number of contemporary art collections, including the Fondation Cartier in Paris, the Museet For Fotokunst in Copenhagen, the Audi Bank in Beirut, and most recently, the Pori Art Museum in Finland. In conversation with Livia Alexander, Baladi will discuss her work on view at 19 Washington Square North.

A citizens council is gathered to perform the ritual of the circle commune. The performance mirrors the ritualistic qualities of operating systems of politics - voting, border settlement and public statement. The theatricality and stagnation of common politics is mimicked by the local citizens council, in a heathen and tribal display.

The 25th January 2011 has been marked in history as the start of the unforeseen ‘Egyptian Revolution’ ending in triumphantly terminating a repressive regime providing hope of new beginnings to millions. However with great prevail came great sorrow and many families counted their losses following the aggressive portion of the peaceful revolt.
One of the unsung heroes of the Egyptian Revolution was Ahmed Bassiouny who died on January 28 while defending his rights to a better living. Bassiouny was a sound, visual artist, musician and teachers assistant at the Faculty of Art Education, Painting and Drawing Department, Helwan University.
