ArteEast is thrilled to invite you to an intimate screening of “Preserving Taste” followed by a Cooking and Storytelling Demonstration led by Chef Hanif Sadr alongside filmmaker Gelareh Kiazand. During the event, Sadr and Kiazand will do a step-by-step demonstration of various cooking techniques from Iran’s northern province of Mazandaran. They will also share their findings during the research phase of their film, Preserving Taste, and give a scope of the history and significance of various ingredients and their preservation that has been integral to Persian/Iranian Cuisine. Taking care to present dishes that reflect an array of culinary techniques, participants will be able to apply these methods to various other Iranian recipes at home. Following the demonstration, guests are invited to mingle over drinks and a bowl of warm ash (Iranian herb soup).

This event is organized in conjunction with the REFLECTIONS FROM THE FUTURE film program which includes Kiazand’s Preserving Taste. The documentary focuses on the culinary traditions from northern Iran’s Mazandaran province where some of the oldest methods of growing and fermenting food have been practiced for generations. The film shares chef Hanif Sadr’s efforts in preserving and sharing the food from this region to communities in the U.S.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE FUTURE is curated by Lila Nazemian and co-presented by ArteEast and UnionDocs. This program is part of the legacy program Unpacking the ArteArchive, which preserves and presents 20 years of film and video programming by ArteEast. The film program will be screened online on artearchive.org from February 25-March 5, 2024. The in-person screening takes place on February 29 at UnionDocs and includes Hadi Afarideh’s The Afar and Gelareh Kiazand’s Preserving Taste, followed by a Q&A and tasting with filmmaker Gelareh Kiazand, Chef Hanif Sadr, and ArteEast Programs and Communications Director, Lila Nazemian.
