When I was younger, I never considered art as a profession. Where I came from, art was something one does as a hobby whereas college was to study something serious in order to land a stable job. I majored in business marketing and worked in advertising, which was my window into a creative environment. My career in this field lasted 8 years, until my craving to paint was getting so severe that at the age of 29 I traveled to Barcelona to participate in a contemporary art workshop. Hani Alqam’s work is deep-seated in his surroundings and every day experience in his city and of residence, Amman. Primarily a painter and print-maker, Alqam has more recently been involved in organizing and curating projects between the UK and Jordan, supporting and working with other local artists. For his work on the Arab League Café, a coffeehouse in downtown Amman, Hani spent several nights a week over a 6 year period painting and drawing the café and its patrons, a space marked by, as he claims “a harsh rawness and at the same time a fragility that leaves all exposed.” ... more »

Setareh Shahbazi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1978 and moved to Germany in 1985. From 1997 to 2003 she studied Scenography and Media Arts at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe. Framed by a Scolarship from the DAAD, she spent one year in Beirut/Lebanon, where she worked on the project "Oh, no, no... – The Crystal Series“. She lives and works in Berlin and Beirut, but dreams of moving to LA one day.
