Ashkal Alwan presents Home Workspace Program (HWP): "Creating and Dispersing Universes that Work without Working"Date: June 15, 2013REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN to the third edition of Home Workspace Program (HWP) with resident professors (RPs) Jalal Toufic and Anton Vidokle. Led by Toufic and Vidokle, the program will focus on artistic concerns ranging from how to build and/or disperse a universe that doesn’t fall apart ‘two days’ later, to an inquiry into work in art practice and the possibility of sovereign art. Organized in five thematic blocks, the program will be comprised of a series of public lectures and a seminar by Jalal Toufic that draws on cinema, art, literature and science; and exhibitions and publishing projects organized by Anton Vidokle in collaboration with visiting artists, participants of the program and e-flux journal. Beirut Art Center: "Author(ity)" Workshop by no.w.here (Karen Mirza and Brad Butler)Date: May 20, 2013May 20-27 In conjunction with the exhibition Video Vintage, Beirut Art Center has invited Karen Mirza and Brad Butler to lead a workshop around political engagement in film. The participants in the workshop will collaborate in a multidisciplinary project combining practice and theory, the outcome of which will be presented to the public on Monday 27 May, 8 pm. For a week we will work together to intertwine experimentation with theory and practice using drawing, political theatre, video, sound and public interventions to get inside the power dynamics of images and the film apparatus in order to understand and subvert how we as artists, activists and/or filmmakers can co-author work. Darb 1718 Contemporary Art & Culture Center: Portrait and Figure Making WorkshopDate: May 16, 2013Portrait and Figure Making Course: A call for participation to join the Portrait and Figure Making course taking place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from each week in May and June from 6 to 9 pm. WARP Artist VillageDate: May 15, 2013For one week (August 5th–10th) a group of about 25 artists will be given the opportunity to join the Artist Village in C-mine Genk (BE). This gathering, where young artists from all over the world discuss their artwork with professionals of the international art scene, has by now become a WARP tradition. The 25 selected artists under age 35 will have a captivating opportunity to reflect on their art in a professional environment. Their interaction with curators, art critics, museum directors, collectors, psychoanalysts, philosophers and established artists from New York to Beijing and from Toronto to Cape Town, as well as with other participating artists, is a unique starting point to further develop their professional art careers. The JamJar Workshop: Sonic Electronic Kitchen Appliance Symphony (SEKAS)Date: May 11, 2013A collaboration with ISEA, organised by Zayed University and sponsored by ADMAF, The workshop encourages participants to repurpose kitchen appliances and kitchen utensils to create electronic improvisation, sound exploration, and musical recordings. Participants are encouraged to experiment with sound for the first time or are interested in partaking in a design project to write partitions or music recipes for non-traditional instruments. As part of its educational and outreach program, Beirut Art Center is holding a series of seminars that will introduce students, amateurs and art professionals to philosophical concepts that enhance understanding of contemporary art. The seminars, held every two weeks on a Thursday in order that participants have time to read and digest texts, will be held by Fares Chalabi and other invited speakers. Mathaf: Artist Encounters with Athier MousawiDate: April 7, 2013Workshop dates: April 7, 9,10,11, 14,16,17,18, 21, 4:00 - 7:00pm Join artist Athier Mousawi for a collaborative workshop inspired by the work of pioneering Iraqi artist Jewad Selim. Participants will contribute to the completion of an original artwork by Mousawi, entitled Mother, Land, Love and Fear. Through creative writing and experimentation with drawing and painting, participants will add their own symbols to Mousawi’s artwork. NYU Abu Dhabi: Artist Talk: Art-Making and the Avant-Garde in the UAEDate: April 6, 2013In conjunction with their exhibitions now on view at NYUAD, UAE-native Mohammed Kazem and Dubai-based Brazilian artist Jessica Mein introduce their work and discuss art-making in the UAE today. Kazem is the sole artist representing the UAE at the 2013 Venice Biennale, and works extensively as a curator. Mein exhibits internationally as well as in the UAE, and is preparing her second solo exhibition at Simon Preston Gallery in New York this fall. |
