Program in Peacebuilding and the Arts, Brandeis University: A Workshop for Artists Working in Zones of Violent Conflict

Date: August 15, 2012

The workshop is sponsored by the Program in Peacebuilding and the Arts and will be held at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts from September 21–23 (Session I) and September 28–30 (Session II). *The same workshop will be offered twice, so please apply for one session only. This workshop is designed for artists, cultural workers and leaders of cultural institutions, who work or plan to work in zones of violent conflict around the world, including the United States. It will consist of an exploration of the relationship between dialogue and art.

The workshop will be co-led by Farhat Agbaria who has facilitated encounters between Israelis and Palestinians for decades. He has run dialogue sessions and trained countless facilitators at Seeds of Peace since the program’s inception in 1993, working with teenagers and adults from the Middle East, the former Yugoslavia, South Asia and the United States. Farhat was the field director for Interns for Peace and the co-director of the Face-to-Face program at Givat Haviva in Israel, where he continues to work. Farhat will be joined by Dr. Cynthia Cohen, Director of the Program in Peacebuilding and the Arts at Brandeis University, who teaches, conducts research and advocates for the field of peacebuilding and the arts. Cindy led the project Acting Together on the World Stage: Performance and the Creative Transformation of Conflict, a seven-year collaboration with Theatre Without Borders that culminated in a two-volume anthology, documentary film and toolkit. She has written extensively on the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of peacebuilding, including, with Farhat, “Working with Groups in Conflict: The Effects of Power on the Dynamics of the Group.”

The workshop itself will be facilitated using frameworks that are drawn from group dynamics, conflict transformation, personal growth, and educational theories. Exchange of expertise among participants will be encouraged; teaching and learning will be both experiential and didactic. The facilitators invite changes in self-awareness, awareness of the other, integration of emotions, understanding of conflicts, and commitments to act in the world.  For more information and to apply, click here.

Independent Curators International: Curatorial Intensive, "Curating Beyond Exhibition Making"

Date: August 10, 2012

Program Dates: October 21-30, 2012
Application Deadline: August 10, 2012

This fall, Independent Curators International (ICI) is producing the Curatorial Intensive: Curating Beyond Exhibition Making, the first short course to offer training to curators on the concepts and logistics of organizing public events, workshops, and other discursive program formats. Topics under discussion will include new formats for durational pedagogical projects and the production of events and curatorial publications, as well as more traditional museum education models. Central to all sessions will be discussions discerning audience and publics, and the consideration of time and space in relation to programming.

Recognizing there are few opportunities for professionals to receive practical training and guidance while also working, the Curatorial Intensive is targeted toward self-motivated individuals—working independently or in institutions—who would benefit from a week of intensive conversations around issues and questions that arise for curators. These range from the pragmatics of developing a program and building working relationships with artists, to the theoretical aspects of understanding how to turn a concept into a project and effectively communicate ideas.

Medrar for Contemporary Art, Egypt: Bearing Witness Workshop

Date: July 31, 2012

The objective of Bearing Witness is to provide an artistic eyewitness account to the extraordinary experiences of ordinary Egyptians living during these extraordinary times. During extraordinary times, stories tend to be told more sincerely. Sharing and appreciating such stories helps bridge individual differences by creating a collective consciousness and awareness of the “other.”

The concept of “bearing witness” will further the goals of fostering dialogue and bridge-building by allowing members of the community to voice their stories in a friendly forum. The stories will provide the participants with a single focus thereby creating collaborative and inter-disciplinary works of art. By adopting practical, poignant and at times poetic gestures that occur in the public realm as tactics for artistic statements the general public will easily identify with sophisticated new genre art forms based on their own experiences.

Bearing witness is a two-phase project. The first phase questions the concept of bearing witness from a distance where participants create their artistic statements based on media transmitted version of Egyptian stories. This phase will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The second phase will be witnessing on a more intimate ground as the project moves to Cairo, Egypt September 2012, inviting Egyptians to share their own stories through works of art. The project will target broad audiences from both Egypt and the United States of America.

During the three weeks of workshops investigation and collaborative work will be developed in a context of community dialogue, personal encounters, and collective learning using both theory and practice. For more information, click here.

Grant Writing Strategies- Online Course by Node Center

Date: July 8, 2012

What are the competencies we really need in reaching that success? Some may say that is all about the credibility of the artists you are working with, some may argue it is all about how accurate your description of the project is, others may say that nothing is more important than having sound impact in the community or society at large.

This course suggests that a coherent mix of all of these, plus good writing skills, will do the best!

Therefore, upon completing this course, we aim for you to have enhanced competencies in:
1. Recognizing the credibility factors (artist's bio, collective artists' CV, gallery's CV, curator's CV, referrals' credibility).

2. Coherent and complex description of the art project (synopsis, theme, approach, medium and technique, relevance, process, production, outcomes, expected impact).

3. Working with a project's budget.

4. Managing a simple, clear and concise writing style.

Lecturer: Luminita Ratiu, Professional fundraiser in the non-profit and Art sectors

Duration: July 11th - August 6th, 2012
