A conversation with filmmaker Tamer El Said and writer/critic Kaelen Wilson-Goldie will follow the film screening. Tamer El Said’s ambitious debut feature tells the fictional story of a filmmaker from downtown Cairo played by Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner, United 93, Green Zone, The Square) as he struggles to capture the sou of a city on edge while facing loss in his own life. Shot in Cairo, Beirut, Baghdad and Berlin during the two years before the outbreak of revolution in Egypt, the film’s multi-layered stories are a visually rich exploration of friendship, loneliness and life in cities shaped by the shadows of war and adversity. Join us Tuesday, August 7, 7pm at UnionDocs for an evening with Egyptian filmmaker Aida ElKashef, in conversation with Sarah Leah Whitson, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch's Middle East and North Africa Division. The evening will feature a sneak preview of Aida ElKashef’s The Day I Ate The Fish, the feature documentary in-progress revisits stories of women behind bars in Egypt’s infamous women’s prison, Al Qanater, convicted of murdering their husbands. The evening will include a screening of ElKashef’s activist video work with Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment (OpAntiSH), active in Egypt during the revolution to combat sexual harrassment and sexual assaults of female protestors in Tahrir Square.
Join us on Wednesday, June 27 at 7pm for the culminating evening in this season’s ArteEast series Films, Facts, and Fiction to be held at e-flux. The evening features a selection of short films by Larissa Sansour and Søren Lind, Ghassan Salhab and Mohamed Soueid, Monira al-Qadiri, and Ayman Nahle, and a music video coda by Meriem Bennani. Sampling an array of genres from science-fiction to the essay film, documentary détournement, and the music video, the five works, each in their own way, perform a subtle queering of place—political or intimate, made up or registered. Some are funny, and all are touching.
