(On) Difficult Terms

By

The excerpts of conversations dotted and hyperlinked across this Fall issue of the Quarterly are transcriptions from a workshop developed with journalists, editors, and copyeditors from Mada Masr, an independent online Egyptian newspaper founded in June 2013 and based in Cairo. In September 2013, we spent an afternoon holed up in Mada’s office debating the changing meaning of words like “revolution”, “disillusion”, “coup”–all terms that were beginning to slip from common understanding. In a shook up, pre/post-revolutionary, pre/post-coup city, our reflections testified to language’s flexibility and to its entering into crisis in unison with the world that it describes.
The resulting documentation “(On) difficult terms” exists as a 40 minute audio recording, a transcript lovingly typed up by Lina Attalah.
Workshop participants included Lina Attalah, Adelita Husni-Bey, Habiba Effat, Antonia Alampi, Dalia Rabie, Heba Afify, Maha ElNabawi, Naira Antoun and Omar Halawa.
